about

I have a nasty habit of isolating myself from the people I care about. Out of all of my anxiety symptoms, it's probably the one I've built the least resistance against. When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I tend to shut myself in and neglect to respond to my friends.

Usually it's strongest during the Fall and Winter, but as you can imagine this year's a bit different. I've got a fun and flirty "All isolation all the time" vibe going on.

It goes without saying that this is self sabotage. Solitude is healthy in certain amounts. And we all need to stay distanced as much as possible right now. But when responding to simple text messages is an Event that I have to hype myself up for... that's a problem.

It's more obvious than ever that we need strong communities in order to thrive. We need each other if we're going to feed our souls, feed our mouths, and create a truly peaceful world.

As you can imagine, my impulse to shut myself away really gets in the way of this. You can't maintain friendships or communities if you hardly talk to anyone.

I wrote these songs to represent different emotional responses to isolation. From comfort to panic, elation to dissociation. I always find it easier to fully process my feelings when I've found a soundtrack for them. I hope they can bring you some emotional closure and satisfaction as well. They may not be especially happy songs, but maybe they can impart joy in their own way.

I think these songs are best treated as temporary emotional tour guides. We need to allow ourselves to feel our feelings, but wallowing isn't going to help. My goal is to break out of this current cycle of isolation. I'll still be locked down of course. But I'd like to remove the mental barriers that keep me from being a better friend and neighbor to the people in my life.

I officially feel like I've shared way too much, which is my personal barometer for when something I've made counts as "art." Thanks for reading and listening. It means the world to me.
